The Department of Antiquities of the Prehistoric and Historic Periods of the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology-Speleology is responsible for the management, protection, and research of caves associated with human presence.
More specifically, it is responsible for planning and conducting site inspections, excavations, and all types of research programs, or supervising them, in caves; for locating and exploring new caves; and for the rescue and protection of remains found within caves. It is also in charge of the maintenance, enhancement, and arrangement of cave sites and their surrounding natural landscape, their recording and delineation within protection zones. In addition, it oversees the protection, study, and promotion of finds originating from caves through their presentation in permanent and temporary exhibitions in the Ephorate’s museums or in other museums, as well as in educational, outreach, and scientific activities.
Additionally, the Department is responsible for organizing a Lithic Technology Laboratory aimed at advancing research on the technologies involved in the manufacture of stone tools.
