Department of Archaeological Works and Studies, Geology and Paleontology


Description - Responsibilities:

The Department of Archaeological Works and Studies, Geology and Palaeontology of the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology- Speleology is responsible for:
a) Ensuring the handling of technical matters relating to the preparation of technical studies and the execution of works in caves carried out by the Ephorate or under its supervision, such as the surveying and topographical documentation of caves and palaeontological sites, geotechnical studies, stabilization and configuration works in caves and their surrounding areas, and the implementation of studies for the restoration and enhancement of archaeological cave sites.
b) The technical documentation and investigation of structural, architectural and, more generally, technical issues concerning cave sites, as well as the publication of their results.
c) The preparation of museological studies concerning antiquities originating from caves.
d) The maintenance and operation of all types of administrative, museum and storage facilities and building infrastructure of the Ephorate, in cooperation with the services of the General Directorate of Restoration, Museums and Technical Works.
e) The preparation of proposals for the inclusion of new projects in co-funded programmes.
f) The identification, exploration and evaluation of caves, as well as specialized geological research and studies in the fields of geomorphology, palaeoenvironment, etc.; the operation of a Geological Laboratory and the establishment of a Rock Repository.
g) The organization of research at palaeontological sites, as well as the study of palaeontological finds from caves and open-air sites
