Modern shipwreck in the area of Messenia, Peloponnese
East of Methoni, in the so called 'Rock of Karasoumani', the personnel of the EUA has located a shipwreck. The shipwreck is dated to modern times.
The cargo ship transported construction material such as roof tiles from Marseille, bricks and bags containing lime. The preserved dimensions are 40X16 m.
Parts of its wooden hull remain at the surface of the sandy seabed whereas its main part is buried in the sand.
The tiles have inscriptions from the production factory. During the 19th century imported roof tiles from Marseille were used to decorate the Greek new classical houses.
During the underwater research samples of the ship’s cargo and its hull have been recovered for further investigation.
The underwater research had been conducted after a citizen indicated the position of the shipwreck.
Future underwater research of the shipwreck will reveal further important information such as the origin and the construction technique of the ship, the way it sunk, the sea route that it followed as well as the trade and the social/economic condition of the period etc.
