Naked young man (athlete)
The statue was found west of Kythnos island, in depth of 450m by the fishermen A. Argyropoulos and K. Spyrakis in 2004. It is a life- sized bronze statue of a young man, preserved hight 1.43m, chest's circumference 0.95m. and 70 kilos weight. It depicts an adolescent with the right leg standing while the left is moved aside and backwards, with marked bent knee and two arms in action.
The head and the neck base, the right arm, the right leg from mid thigh and part of the back are missing. By examining the technical details it is verified that the workmanship had been good, probably original work that is dated in the Late Classical - Early Hellenistic period- specifically in the late 4th/ early 3rd cent. B.C.
It was found in a good state, mainly the back and the right thigh were eroded. On the inside there was big concentration of mud and clay, while on the inside of the leg from the ankle downwards there is lead. On the surface tough deposits.
There is a hole on the existing foot, underneath the toes at the support point , one above the ankle and one on the inside of the left wrist as well. Cracks and crackings where the limbs were cut off (right knee, right shoulder and wrist) and a thin crack on the back side of the left leg. There are cavities of several shapes for patches attachment , which in some cases are preserved. In some places scrapes and exfoliations.
It underwent gradual desalination with water and afterwards with sterile water, while at the same time the depositions were mechanically removed. The desalination begun in October 2004 and completed in April 2005.
Alloy analysis were undertaken my means of X-Ray Floresence and radiographical test at Demokritos laboratories. Furthermore X-rays were taken. Afterwards it was well washed- cleaned mainly on the inside, from where samples of mud and depositions were taken for chemical analysis performed at Demokritos in February 2006. Then follows detailed mechanical cleaning, dehumidification by infrared radiation and fixation with solution Paraloid B72.
On the left arm remains a cleaning control of dimensions 2X2.
On 30/9/2013 it was transferred in the National Archaeological Museum's laboratories, where it undergoes support operations.
