The Museum of Byzantine Culture invites you cordially to the scientific meeting "The wood-carved iconostasis of the Post-Byzantine times (16th - 19th c.)". The symposium will be held on Friday 30 November and Saturday 1 December 2018 in the Museum's amphitheatre "Melina Mercouri".
The Museum, in collaboration with the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation and MVN Consultants, trying to deepen and expand the thematics of the permanent exhibition, organized in 2017 the temporary exhibition "TEMPLON. Sacred figures, invisible gates of faith, 20th and 21st centuries". Following this exhibition, the Museum organizes this scientific meeting by examining issues related to the form - architecture, typology, decoration, technique, semiotics, function, aesthetics and terminology that concern the wood-carved iconostasis of Post-Byzantine times .
36 Greek and foreign scientists participate in the symposium, archaeologists, art historians, architects and art conservators with contributions concerning the concept of the wooden Post-Byzantine iconostasis. Moreover a significant number of preserved iconostasis, covering a geographically important region of the Post-Byzantine orthodox world (Macedonia, Mount Athos, Thessaly, Epirus, Peloponnese, Ionion and Aegean Sea, eastern Thrace, Cyprus and Russia), is presented.
Entrance is free to the public.
