The Office of Northern Greece is a unit of the Archaeological Service at the level of a Department under the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology and Speleology. The Office is the state authority responsible for the research, protection and promotion of caves and palaeontological remains, which are connected to human activity, within the Regional Units of Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Western Macedonia and North Aegean.
Its mission is to locate, research, excavate, study and protect antiquities and all kinds of finds that originate from caves. The Office participates in international and European programs, organizes conferences and seminars, organizes and carries out educational programs and cultural events. Additionally, the Office is responsible for communicating promotional activities, as well as producing conventional and digital publications and educational material.
The Office of Northern Greece exercises its responsibilities by conducting field inspections, excavations and all forms of scientific research. It also prepares and implements studies on the maintenance and conservation of cave sites and the archaeological findings located or found in caves, and takes actions for their enhancement and public presentation.
