HISTORICAL & MONUMENTAL CONTEXT

The Venetian Fortress of Sfakia (Castel di Sfacia or Sfachia) is situated on Kasteli Hill, on the eastern edge of Chora Sfakion. It occupies a crucial, strategic vantage point offering unimpeded views over the Libyan Sea, Gavdos, Gavdopoula, the western coastline stretching to Agia Roumeli, and the mountainous hinterland.

• Venetian Period: Built during the late Venetian period as a small fortified tower complex serving as the seat of the local governor. The first explicit written testimony appears in 1584 in the report of Superintendent Alvise Grimani. Reports detailing decay and the need for repairs are documented in the late 16th and early 17th centuries (Nicolo Dona, Lorenzo Contarini), while in 1644 Andrea Corner ordered the addition of a gunpowder storehouse.
• Ottoman Period & Modern Era: Abandoned and ruined during the early centuries of Ottoman rule, it was substantially renovated and expanded around 1868 into an Ottoman garrison tower (koules).

PHYSICAL OBJECTIVE & RESTORATION WORKS

The project aims to resolve severe structural pathologies of the building envelope, ensure structural integrity, and create a safe, accessible archaeological site for public visits.

The planned interventions include:

1. Research & Foundations: Investigation of the original floor levels and grout injection into foundation areas to improve structural cohesion.
2. Structural Restoration: Rebuilding damaged masonry sections using compatible stones and repair mortars, consolidating cracks, pointing masonry, and ensuring wall continuity.
3. Floor Restoration: Restoring the traditional pebble floor of the Venetian fortress as well as the compacted earth floors within individual structures.
4. Access & Safety: Constructing a stone access staircase leading to the surrounding area and installing protective safety railings along outer rocky slopes.
5. Enhancement & Infrastructure: Installing architectural accent lighting, informative panels, and a dedicated Braille sign for visually impaired visitors.

PURPOSE, INNOVATION & MONUMENT NETWORKING

• Innovative Cultural Tourism: The project establishes a model for sustainable cultural tourism in Sfakia, linking architectural conservation with high-value cultural experiences.
• Network of Monuments: Enhancing the fortress forms part of a broader strategy to establish a network of cultural routes across the Sfakia region (connecting with nearby landmarks such as Frangokastello), encouraging combined visits and extending tourist stays.

ACCESSIBILITY, EQUALITY & SUSTAINABILITY

• Accessibility: Due to the steep terrain and elevated topography, physical access for mobility-impaired individuals is restricted. However, landscaping ensures excellent visual appreciation from multiple vantage points around the settlement. The installation of a Braille signage panel ensures equal access to historical information.
• Non-Discrimination & Equality: Strict adherence to European and national directives regarding gender equality and non-discrimination is maintained throughout project execution and site management.
• Sustainability & Venice Charter: Interventions adhere strictly to international restoration standards (Venice Charter), prioritizing eco-friendly materials, the protection of the natural landscape, and low-impact design.

Upon completion, a fully restored, safe, and functional monument of fortification architecture will be delivered to the local community and international visitors.
